The American War Bride Experience

GI Brides of World War II

by Rebecca Ives
Such a handsome man indeed
Promptly swept me off my feet
Uniform with decorations
Brought instant infatuations!

Took me to the Captain's ball
Proud he was, erect and tall
Glad to have a girl like me
The envy of the whole Navy!

So we wed in just one week
With hardly enough time to think
But wild with hope and fantasy
Of what a quick marriage could be!

War is spun on pride and greed
Wives and kids are left in need
The love of money, honor, power
Bring men to their final hour.

This is to all of you war brides
Who suffered through anger and pride
Whose men expressed their wrath unfair
And closed the door to love and care.

May God bless you and your children
That pain and misery are undone
That He has giv'n you peace and rest
And through your patience you've been blessed.

Now he's an old re-married cuss
His wife puts up with his madness
He bellows out most every night
That he'll soon rescue his war bride!
